What is a dental implant?

Single Crown Implant
A dental implant is made of a few parts: a post, an abutment, and a crown. The post, or the implant itself, is surgically placed within your jawbone to take the place of the root of your tooth. The abutment sits on top of the post and connects the post to the porcelain crown that replaces your tooth.

Benefits of dental implants

Getting dental implants isn’t just about restoring your appearance; it’s about taking back your life and your confidence. Just some of the benefits of dental implants are:

  • Comfortable
  • Permanent & secure
  • Long-lasting option
  • Look and feel like your natural teeth
  • Freedom to eat what you like and not worry
  • Prevent bone loss and your other teeth from moving

Essentially, dental implants replace your teeth in feel and function. Yes, you will restore your confidence in your beautiful smile, but you will be able to reclaim your life. Dealing with missing teeth, especially a lot of them, is a very emotional hurdle. Dental implants can help you get your life and confidence back.

Types of dental implants

Single implants
If you’re missing a single tooth, Dr. Gies may suggest a single implant. This will include a single post, abutment, and crown. Talk to Dr. Giea about whether or not a single implant is appropriate for you.

Implant supported bridge

Implant supported bridge is a tooth-replacement option that uses one or two implants to support a bridge. This is an excellent option if you are looking to replace multiple teeth.

All on 4 implants

If you’re missing a full arch, all-on-4 implants can replace all of your teeth with only four or six implants. This is a great option for people looking for something more secure than dentures.

Implant-retained dentures

Implant retained dentures are dentures that are secured into place with implants. Unlike more traditional implants, these are removable. If you’re missing multiple or all of your teeth, these are a great option.

What to expect from the procedure & recovery

Your implant procedure will take a few visits. At your consultation, Dr. Gies will work with you to determine the type and number of implants you will need. During this appointment, he will also determine whether or not there are any other procedures, like extractions, that need to take place before you get your implants placed.

Once you and Dr. Gies have decided on a treatment plan, you will come back for another appointment wherein he will surgically implant the post into your jawbone, a procedure that should not hurt. Once the post(s) is placed, you will need to wait for it to heal before Dr. Gies can place your crown. During this time, your post will actually fuse to your jawbone in a process called osseointegration, which can take between 6 weeks and 6 months. Following this process, Dr. Gies can complete the process and your implants will be complete and secure.
